In Memoriam: Johnny Poole

A Tribute from CinemaNext

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed colleague and friend, Johnny Poole, Lead Engineer at CinemaNext UK. Johnny left us last week after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, expertise, and warmth that will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

Johnny's journey with CinemaNext was nothing short of inspiring. Starting as a field engineer in June 2019, his exceptional skills, tireless work ethic, and passion for cinema technology saw him rise to the position of Lead Engineer in just four years—a testament to his remarkable talent and commitment.

Before joining our CinemaNext family, Johnny honed his craft as a Theatre Technician at the Athenaeum Centre for over 12 years. This rich background in lighting and theatre tech provided him with a unique perspective that proved invaluable in his work with us.

During his time at CinemaNext, Johnny left an indelible mark on the UK cinema landscape. He was the driving force behind several high-profile projects, most notably:

  • The comprehensive revamp of the BAFTA 195 Piccadilly screening rooms, where his expertise helped create a world-class viewing experience for some of the industry's most discerning audiences.
  • The development of the new Curzon Camden cinema, a project that showcased Johnny's ability to blend cutting-edge technology with the atmospheric charm of a beloved London landmark.

These and other projects stand as a testament to Johnny's skill, vision, and the positive impact he had on the cinema-going experience for countless individuals.

Beyond his professional achievements, Johnny was a beloved colleague known for his kindness, his willingness to mentor others, and his infectious enthusiasm for cinema technology. His loss leaves a void not just in our organisation, but in the hearts of all who knew him.

To Johnny's family—his wife, children, and loved ones—we extend our deepest condolences. Your loss is immeasurable, and our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

As we bid farewell to our dear friend and colleague, we take comfort in the lasting legacy he leaves behind. The cinemas he helped create and improve will continue to bring joy and wonder to audiences for years to come—a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the magic of the silver screen.

Rest in peace, Johnny. Your light may have dimmed, but the brilliance of your work and the warmth of your memory will continue to shine brightly in our hearts and in every darkened cinema where dreams come to life.

You will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
