CinemaNext Provides Sustainable Cinema Solution for Film Archive Austria's Pop-up Theatre

CinemaNext, Europe’s leading cinema solutions provider, has successfully completed an innovative installation project for Film Archive Austria's new pop-up cinema at the METRO Kinokulturhaus in Vienna. The project showcases CinemaNext's commitment to sustainable solutions and cross-border collaboration within its European network.

The installation, which opened on January 24, 2025, demonstrates how pre-owned cinema equipment can be effectively repurposed to create high-quality viewing experiences while maintaining cost-effectiveness for cultural institutions. The project was made possible through collaboration between multiple CinemaNext offices , with CinemaNext Austria leading the integration effort.

"This project perfectly illustrates our ability to provide tailored solutions that meet both technical requirements and budget constraints," says Christof Federle, CinemaNext Austria's General Manager. "By sourcing a second-hand digital projector from our Netherlands division and audio equipment from our Spanish colleagues, we were able to deliver a complete cinema solution that aligns with Film Archive Austria's sustainability goals."

Ernst Kieninger, Director of Film Archive Austria, expressed his satisfaction with the installation: "The collaboration with CinemaNext has enabled us to realise our vision of a sustainable and flexible cinema space. This new Kinosalon represents an important step in expanding our programming capabilities while maintaining our commitment to environmental responsibility."

The new 80-seat venue, dubbed "Kinosalon" in reference to the location's historical significance, will serve as an additional screening space for Film Archive Austria. This expansion comes at a crucial time, as the METRO Kinokulturhaus has seen a record visitor numbers and increased demand as a festival venue and cultural event space.

The installation aligns with Film Archive Austria's innovative approach to space utilisation, converting an exhibition room into a flexible cinema space. CinemaNext's technical team worked closely with the archive to ensure the installation met professional cinema standards while maintaining the versatility required for a pop-up venue.

This project represents a growing trend in the cinema industry toward sustainable solutions and adaptive reuse of equipment, with CinemaNext leading the way in providing environmentally conscious options for cultural institutions.
